Kyanite, the name derives from the Greek word kuanos also referred to as "kyanos", meaning deep blue. Despite the name Kyanite is an Allochrmatic crystal, so can occur in an array of different colours including blue, green, indigo, white, grey, pink, yellow and even orange. Kyanite is strongly anisotropic, meaning its hardness differs depending on its crystallographic direction. Kyanite can exhibit a cat’s eye effect (chatoyancy) but this is limited by its anisotropism and perfect cleavage. Please note sometimes Kyanite is heat treated or dyed to enhance it's natural beauty however this is rare.
